Gravity and Boundary Conditions

The influence of gravity on the flow pattern is often an important issue when modeling flow in fluids with variable density. You can account for this influence in the model equations by adding, to the momentum balances, the volume force. This model shows a simple example of the ... Read More

Laminar Flow in a Baffled Stirred Mixer

This model exemplifies the use of the Rotating Machinery interface, which allows you to model moving rotating parts in, for example, stirred tanks, mixers, and pumps. The Rotating Machinery interface formulates the Navier-Stokes equations in a rotating coordinate system. Parts that ... Read More

Turbulent Mixing of a Trace Species

This tutorial model demonstrates how mixing can be visualized in a stirred vessel by seeding a trace species from a point. The flow is modeled using the Rotating Machinery, Fluid Flow physics which solves Navier-Stokes equations on geometries with rotating parts, for example impellers. ... Read More

Pipe Erosion due to Contaminant Particles

The _Particle Tracing for Fluid Flow_ interface is used to compute the erosion of a pipe bend. The amount of material lost is computed using different erosion models. Read More

Airflow over an Ahmed Body

The Ahmed body represents a simplified, ground vehicle geometry of a bluff body type. Its shape is simple enough to allow for accurate flow simulation but retains some important practical features relevant to automobile bodies. This model describes how to calculate the turbulent flow ... Read More

Modeling a Sphere Falling on a Water Surface

This model shows modeling of a sphere falling on a water surface. Specifically, it models the oscillating motion of a buoyant sphere as it falls through air and interacts with the air-water interface to finally float on water. Get more details in our blog post: [Modeling a Sphere Falling on a Water Surface](https://www.comsol.com/blogs/modeling-a-sphere-falling-on-a-water-surface/) ... Read More

Two-Phase Flow Modeling of a Dense Suspension

Liquid-solid mixtures (suspensions) are important in a variety of industrial fields, such as oil and gas refinement, paper manufacturing, food processing, slurry transport, and wastewater treatment. Several different modeling approaches have been developed by the CFD community, ranging ... Read More

Flow of Oldroyd-B Viscoelastic Fluid

Many complex fluids of interest exhibit a combination of viscous and elastic behavior under strain. Examples of such fluids are polymer solutions and melts, oil, toothpaste, and clay, among many others. The Oldroyd-B fluid presents one of the simplest constitutive models capable of ... Read More

Solar Panel in Periodic Flow Template

This model exemplifies the analysis of strong wind flow around a solar panel and the corresponding structural displacement due to the wind's load. The solar panel is located in an array of equally spaced identical panels, which allows for the assumption that the periodic flow conditions ... Read More

Fluid Damper

Fluid dampers are used in military devices for shock isolation and in civil structures for suppressing earthquake-induced shaking and wind-induced vibrations, among many other applications. Fluid dampers work by dissipating the mechanical energy into heat. This model shows the phenomenon ... Read More
