Inertia Mixer in CD Microfluidics

Gyros AB is developing biomedical laboratories in CD-discs, Gyrolab®. In a lot of applications mixers are needed and for some special applications liquid volumes of a few microlitres are to be handled.

The mixing of a few microlitres liquids was studied numerically with FEMLAB and experimentally with colored and uncolored water. Thanks to this combination, the main mixing process was identified and verified. The mixers consist of hollow volumes in the disc with shapes of circular cylinders. The mixing within the cylinders is driven by the rotational inertia of the liquids in combination with centrifugal forces from the rotation of the liquids within the cylinders.
