Simulation of Groundwater Flow Patterns around a Vertical Circulation Well

Vertical circulation wells (VCWs) are well system consisting dual-screened sections allowing synchronous extraction and injection of groundwater in a single borehole. Vertical circulation flow or dipole flow is induced. This type of well has been widely used for in-situ remidiation, aquifer characterization, and for groundwater lowering.

Capturing the groundwater flow patterns induced by a DSI-well is a challenge as the flow near the well is nonuniform and the vertical flow component is significant. Furthermore, the flow system in unconfined aquifers results in water table drawdown, and consequently changes the groundwater level (free-surface problem). This study aims to provide a comprehensive simulation of the groundwater flow patterns around VCWs. Darcy’s Law, ALE, and Poisson's equation are coupled in this study.
