Problem Description

This knowledgebase solution summarizes tips for successful installation of COMSOL Multiphysics.

Solution

Make sure to have the COMSOL Multiphysics Installation Guide at hand when performing the installation. Links for downloading the installation program and instructions are available on the Product Download page. Some useful tips and troubleshooting guides are provided below.

  • To install COMSOL you must have a trial passcode or a license.dat file for the current version. Check your license file and look at the four comment lines at the top of the file; the second row should start with # COMSOL 5.3a. If you do not have a license file for the latest version, please contact your COMSOL sales representative. The COMSOL 5.3a license file is backward compatible with earlier existing COMSOL installations back to COMSOL 3.5a. To learn more about license types, see the the License Choices page.

  • When I try to start COMSOL Multiphysics, nothing happens, or a splash screen appears and then disappears, or the error message COMSOL Multiphysics has stopped working is displayed. Please refer to knowledgebase 1068.

  • If you get the error message Error downloading file. Connection refused when installing COMSOL over the Internet, see knowledgebase 1149.

  • If you already have COMSOL 5.3 or earlier installed, and your license.dat file has a SERVER line at the top, you need to update your license manager with the new COMSOL 5.3a license file. Please refer to knowledgebase solution 1022 for more information.

  • If you get the error message Could not obtain license for COMSOL Multiphysics GUI when you try to start COMSOL go to knowledgebase solution 903.

  • If you get the error message An error has occurred. See the log file C:\Users... when installing or starting COMSOL go to knowledgebase solution 1083 B.

  • If you are installing on Linux and want a troubleshooting guide, see knowledgebase solution 1086.

  • If you have an FNL license and plan to run COMSOL on a compute cluster, see knowledgebase 1001.

  • To find more information about your license status, access user discussion forums and more, log in to COMSOL Access.
