Corrosion and its many forms, such as pitting, provides challenges for engineers across many industries. Multiphysics modeling of pitting corrosion can provide more accurate predictions and a better understanding of its mechanisms.

This video of a COMSOL Conference 2013 keynote speech features Dr. Siddiq Qidwai, Mechanical Engineer at the Multifunctional Materials Branch of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) who shares his insight into modeling pitting corrosion at the microstructural scale. You will hear Dr. Qidwai speak about how modeling can yield essential information about the localized loss of material that occurs during pitting corrosion, the electrochemical reactions that occur at the corrosion front, and pit stresses that can affect larger structures.

At the NRL, Dr. Qidwai researches biomechanical modeling of the human head under extreme conditions, electrically-assisted metal deformation, and microstructure-sensitive corrosion.
